The New Way to Connecticut

Best known as the home of Yale University, New Haven is the second largest city in Connecticut and is part of the New York metropolitan area. The coastal city has experienced—and continues to enjoy—a renaissance. Within an easy stroll from the New Haven Green are more than 100 distinctive restaurants, offering something for every palate, and the city abounds with theaters, museums, and shopping destinations to satisfy all interests and tastes.

New Haven has a rich cultural heritage, from museums and theatres to music festivals and entertainment throughout the year, including the New Haven Jazz Festival, the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and the Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Festival that regularly bring thousands of visitors to the city.

“For years we’ve talked about expanding air service to and from Connecticut and Avelo’s decision to add non-stop service between Sarasota and New Haven – their sixth destination at the airport – will finally give customers an affordable and reliable option to get from the gulf coast to growing hub in New England.” Said Tweed-New Haven Airport Authority Executive Director Sean Scanlon.

Amidst the crowds, long lines, lengthy walks and traffic congestion encountered at other airports frequented by travelers to and from the region, HVN offers a refreshingly smooth and simple alternative hometown airport experience. HVN’s adjacency to multiple major highways and commuter railways make it Connecticut’s most convenient and easily accessible airport.

Avelo is investing $1.2 million to help upgrade and modernize facilities and operations as part of an overall $100 million project at HVN which will include a new terminal and extended runway spearheaded by airport operator Avports. Avelo and HVN are hiring more than 100 aviation professionals by the end of the year who will be based at the airport.

Avelo is the first airline to offer nonstop flights between HVN and Florida. Avelo’s arrival to HVN also marks the largest expansion of service at HVN in more than 30 years.

A Different, Better and More Affordable Travel Experience

Avelo’s everyday low fares have no change or cancellation fees. There is also no charge for Customers who choose to make reservations by phone. Additionally, Avelo offers several unbundled travel-enhancing options that give Customers the flexibility to pay for what they value, including priority boarding, checked bags, carry-on overhead bags, and for bringing a pet in the cabin.

The single-class, fuel-efficient 147-seat 737-700 mainline jets Avelo operates to HVN offer a more spacious and comfortable experience than the regional jets that historically served this airport. Customers may choose from several seating options, including seats with extra leg room, as well as pre-reserved window and aisle seating.

US Summer Travel Surge Will Continue for the Rest of the Year According to Oliver Wyman

NEW YORK, July 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Almost 70% of global consumers plan to travel domestically within the next six months, yet less than ten percent have booked their trips according to a new survey from consulting firm Oliver Wyman.

“The summer travel surge is just the beginning of a recovery that seemed almost impossible a little more than a year ago,” said Jessica Stansbury, a partner with Oliver Wyman. “We expect to see a continued desire for leisure travel through the end of the year and travel providers should anticipate a sustained leisure recovery with strong bookings continuing at least through the end of the year.”

Leisure travel

We predict that traffic out of US airports will match and may even exceed the rate of pre-pandemic travel sometime in early 2022.
The increase in US leisure travel will continue throughout the end of the year and we anticipate significant travel during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
International leisure travel continues to be the most impacted by the pandemic, as travelers opt to stay closer to home. US travelers are more than twice as likely to select a domestic destination for their next leisure trip (67% vs. 27% international).

Business travel

Business travelers are optimistic about the return of corporate trips. Globally, about 75% of business travelers expect to travel the same as or more than they did pre-pandemic. In the US, nearly 80% of US business travelers plan to book travel in the next three months.
There will be a “catch up” in business travel and bookings will spike significantly in the near-term. However, changing company policies and the effectiveness of teleconferencing may reduce the long-term need for business travel.
Business travel will also differ greatly by country. For example, business travelers in the US, China, and Australia are primed to travel significantly more than they did pre-COVID, while Europeans still plan to travel less than before the pandemic.

“Business travel is being driven by fear of missing out,” said Bruce Spear, a partner with Oliver Wyman. “The US economy is so hot right now that some executives may feel short term pressure to catch up on business meetings with colleagues and clients.”

Key factors for travel

Price is the most important criteria in travel decisions and has been throughout the pandemic, with 66% of global travelers ranking price as one of their top three factors to purchase a flight. This is consistent with the US, where the number is also 66%.
Cleanliness is becoming a less important factor in travel decisions as we get further away from the height of the pandemic.
While more airlines promote their environmental sustainability measures, only 17% of consumers globally and 12% of US consumers consider this as a top three factor when deciding about one flight over another. Overall, environmental sustainability measures continue to rank last across all three surveys.
Globally almost 70% of travelers are willing to enroll in a digital identification program which would include vaccine status and other healthcare data. Vaccinated respondents are more willing to share their data, compared to unvaccinated travelers.

“The industry faces significant challenges, especially around the new Delta variant and a possible overall talent shortage, but demand for consumer travel will push the industry back sooner than we initially thought,” said Bruno Despujol, a partner with Oliver Wyman.

About the survey

The third edition of our travel sentiment survey involved nearly 5,300 people across nine countries (Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, United States), all of whom had flown at least once in 2019; nearly 90 percent had been vaccinated against COVID-19 or are planning to be vaccinated.

The full Edition 3 survey report will be available in August/September. You can also access Edition 1 of our survey from May 2020 here and Edition 2 from October 2020 here

Relax, Recharge, Reconnect: Disney Cruise Line Reveals New Indulgences for Adults Aboard the Disney Wish

“With the Disney Wish, we wanted to design an experience that allows our grown-up guests to relax, recharge and reconnect in unique ways that only Disney Cruise Line can create,” said Laura Cabo, portfolio creative executive, Walt Disney Imagineering. “Not only did we infuse more storytelling and enchantment into the adult-exclusive venues, but we added more variety and made them more accessible than ever before. This ship has truly been designed with adults’ vacation needs in mind, and I know our guests are going to return home feeling refreshed after their Disney Wish vacation.”

Outdoor Oasis at Senses Spa
For the first time aboard a Disney ship, Senses Spa will feature a dedicated outdoor relaxation space where guests can unwind in whirlpool spas, rest on plush loungers and find their center during yoga sessions.

This open-air oasis is a brand-new extension to Disney Cruise Line’s signature Rainforest experience, which has been reimagined for the Disney Wish to provide even more ways to relax and rejuvenate. The Rainforest will introduce the fleet’s first ice lounge, allowing guests to combine thermal therapies, which promotes both physical wellness and tranquility. It will also include guest-favorite elements like heated ergonomic loungers; sensory spa showers; and sauna, steam and dry chambers.

Senses Spa will also feature private treatment rooms and lavish spa villas for couples. In addition to a menu of massage, facial and acupuncture therapies, guests will be able to select from a menu of specialized treatments that are customized to their needs, such as pain management and sleep improvement. Adjacent to the spa, the reimagined Senses Fitness will offer state-of-the-art exercise and wellness facilities, including a main room with exercise equipment, a dedicated cycle studio and an aerobics room.

Salon and Barbery
The Disney Wish will premiere two brand-new salon experiences — the fleet’s first standalone venues for hairstyling and beauty services — where adults can treat themselves in inviting, social environments that have been uniquely designed with inspiration from classic Walt Disney Animation Studios films.

Untangled Salon
At Untangled Salon, adults can let their hair down (and have it styled any way they want) in a light and airy environment that is perfect for pampering. Inspired by Rapunzel — the artistic Disney Princess known for her long, flowing tresses — this chic, high-end salon will be adorned in shades of purple and gold, decorated with floating lantern light fixtures and outfitted with custom cut-metal privacy screens depicting Rapunzel’s own paintings. One side of the space will even gleam and glow with the golden light of a signature chandelier that evokes the iconic flower that gave her hair its magical qualities. In addition to haircuts and styling, the menu of services at Untangled Salon will include manicures, pedicures, teeth whitening and skin treatments.

Hook’s Barbery
Hook’s Barbery will be a unique twist on a traditional European men’s salon, offering cuts, shaves, and nail and skin care. Decked out in dark woods, handsome leather chairs and ornate golden mirrors, the space will brim with narrative details inspired by its namesake, Captain Hook: an inlaid wooden map of Never Land, a hidden pocket watch and — of course — a hook, to name a few. A trio of seemingly nondescript lanterns will occasionally come to life with lighting and audio effects to signify Tinker Bell jumping from one fixture to another.

Not only will Hook’s Barbery provide salon and barber services, but it will also boast the ultimate toast to a pirate’s life: a hidden bar. This (not-so-secret) treasure trove of pre-Prohibition bourbons, vintage whisky and port, aged rum and premium spirits will be a liquor enthusiast’s paradise, ideal for low-key hangouts, romantic date nights, hosted tastings and special evening events.

Enchanting Nightlife
Like every Disney Cruise Line vessel, the Disney Wish will offer a collection of relaxed and refined bars and lounges reserved exclusively for adults each evening. But for the first time, these venues will be spread out among the ship’s other core gathering places for a more flexible, free-flow experience that will allow guests — particularly parents — more opportunities to enjoy “me time” throughout their cruise. Also new is the prevalence of storytelling in these spaces, providing a variety of ways for adults to experience some of their favorite Disney stories in sophisticated ways designed especially for them.

Keg & Compass
Keg & Compass is a pub that celebrates the adventure and romance of the sea, designed in the rustic architectural style of a late 1800s Norwegian sailor’s map room. Drawing inspiration from the rich folklore of Norse seafaring, period-style oil paintings will depict tales of the deep and intricate carvings of tentacles, barnacles, compasses and more will accentuate porthole frames.

Spanning the entire ceiling will be a grand, fantastical map in old maritime style that features, among other references to ocean lore, a homage to Disney characters and stories related to the sea. In addition to such characters as Ursula and Moana (appearing in the geographically accurate locations of their stories), the map will call out important locales related to The Walt Disney Company and, specifically, the design and construction of the Disney Wish.

This casual setting is perfect for guests to kick back and watch live sports, news and major broadcast events while sampling a specialized selection of beers, including three custom craft brews available exclusively aboard the Disney Wish, along with an assortment of liquors, wines and cocktails.

Nightingale’s
Nightingale’s is a refined piano bar inspired by Cinderella’s lyrical rendition of “Sing Sweet Nightingale” in the 1950 film, offering an extensive menu of fine wines, bubblies and hand-crafted cocktails. Classically modern with a soft metallic palette, the predominant design feature will be a glittering chandelier perched above the piano — a swirl of pearlescent bubbles and music notes displaying the titular song’s melody meticulously crafted out of shimmering rose gold. This vibrant lounge will be a thematic extension of the fairytale-inspired Grand Hall from which it stems, with large doors that allow the twinkling tunes to spill out across the atrium, inviting passersby to stop and stay for a while.

The Bayou
Guests looking for New Orleans-inspired good time can go down to The Bayou, an informal lounge themed to “The Princess and the Frog.” Flourishing with magnolia blossoms, lily pads and a canopy of twinkling fireflies overhead, this space will evoke the magical marsh where Tiana and Naveen take refuge in the film. A bronze statue of each character will be prominently displayed, and two gazebos inspired by the city’s iconic wrought iron metalwork structures will provide intimate seating for small groups on either side of the bar.

This centrally located venue will offer creative cocktails, specialty coffees and signature beignets in a lively, social atmosphere complete with live entertainment and musical performances.

More Fun for Adults
As previously announced, the Disney Wish will also feature a first-of-its-kind lounge in a galaxy far, far away; a trio of premium culinary experiences inspired by a tale as old as time; and a dedicated pool district on the upper decks exclusively for guests ages 18 and older.

Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge
For the first time on a Disney ship, guests will embark on a space-jumping tour of the Star Wars galaxy at Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge, a high-end bar styled as a luxurious yacht-class spaceship. This richly themed, immersive experience will be reserved for adults every evening, offering interactive tasting experiences and signature beverages inspired by the films.

Exquisite Specialty Dining
Adults will savor gourmet meals and exceptional beverages at Palo Steakhouse, Enchante by Chef Arnaud Lallement and The Rose, an upscale suite of epicurean excellence inspired by the elegant icons of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Beauty and the Beast.”

Palo Steakhouse is an evolution of the Palo restaurant that Disney cruisers know and love, now combining the relaxed sophistication of authentic Italian dining with the classic refinement of a modern steakhouse in a genteel setting inspired by Cogsworth, the tale’s majordomo-turned-enchanted-clock.
Enchante will offer the most luxurious dining experience on board, featuring a gourmet menu crafted by three-Michelin-starred Chef Arnaud Lallement. This romantic and intimate venue will evoke the dazzling spirit of the film’s candelabra maitre d’, Lumiere.
Inspired by the fateful flower at the heart of the story, The Rose is a chic lounge at the entrance of Palo Steakhouse and Enchante, an idyllic setting for a pre-dinner aperitif or after-dinner cocktail.

Quiet Cove Pool District
At Quiet Cove, guests aged 18 and older will find a secluded adults-only district dedicated to lounging, sipping and soaking. Set away from the bustle of family activities, this peaceful refuge will offer panoramic views of the ocean from a luxurious infinity pool. Other amenities include a whirlpool spa, an open-air bar and a poolside cafe.

Maiden Voyage and Inaugural Season
The Disney Wish will sail its maiden voyage on June 9, 2022, followed by a season of three- and four-night cruises to Nassau, Bahamas, and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, from Port Canaveral, Florida.

To learn more about the Disney Wish or to book a vacation, guests can visit disneycruise.com, call Disney Cruise Line at 888-325-2500 or contact their travel agent.

New Summer Travel Itinerary Offers Family Fun, from the Waterfront to the Farms

TACOMA, Wash., July 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As a year and a half of pent-up travel demand is driving families to try and get the most out of their road trips, Travel Tacoma – Mt. Rainier Tourism and Sports today launched its Family Road Trip Extravaganza itinerary, a convenient, pre-built plan that offers three days and two nights of waterfront wandering, city excursions, small-town charm and farmland fun in Pierce County.

“Families have plenty to think about with school being out, summer ticking away, and the pressure to make up for a year of lost travel experiences,” said Matt Wakefield, Director of Marketing and Communications for Travel Tacoma – Mt. Rainier Tourism and Sports. “At Travel Tacoma, we’re steeped in knowledge about what makes an epic trip to this area, so we’re doing what we can to give families a roadmap to a hassle-free trip, where they can see it, book it, then jump in a car and do it.”

The step-by-step itinerary includes suggested walks, beaches, parks, museums, experiences, restaurants and overnight stays.

Family Road Trip Extravaganza starts in the peaceful waterfront village of Gig Harbor, with waterfront parks, a trip through the Harbor History Museum, and a tour of the harbor with the only Venetian gondolier in the Pacific Northwest: The Gig Harbor Gondola. He entertains the kids, sings in Italian, and tells a sliding scale of age-appropriate stories about the history of Gig Harbor.

Follow that with a day filled with waterfront bike rides and museums in Tacoma, including Tacoma Art Museum for their new Benaroya Wing, Museum of Glass for their hot-shop amphitheater and America’s Car Museum for a Family Zone with kid-friendly exhibits including few photogenic, interactive cars that can withstand the gentle caresses of a toddler’s hands, fists and feet.

The trip concludes with a day in the home of Americana in the Pacific Northwest: the town of Sumner, brimming with antiques stores, bookshops, boutiques, bakeries, and cafes. Just down the road is a visit to the agriculture hubs of Puyallup and Buckley to wander farms (depending on the season) and enjoy farm-fresh meals. In springtime, there are blooming flower festivals; in the late summer, Sunflower Days is a photogenic paradise of yellows and oranges; and fall means pumpkin patches, harvest festivals and spooky Halloween delights throughout the valley.

Expedia Invites Travelers to Rediscover the Magic of Cities Through Music, Starting with New York City

In the lead-up to the event, Expedia will spotlight popular NYC hotels, flights and activities and share insider travel tips and other exclusive content to help travelers get the most out of their trips. In addition, Expedia will give away up to 1,000 concert tickets to Expedia Rewards members and provide a variety of other ways for travelers to win tickets ahead of the concert.

Expedia Brand Senior Vice President and General Manager Shiv Singh says: “We’re thrilled to be part of this truly historic occasion and showcase all that New York City has to offer to travelers through special content and experiences on the site, mobile app and our social channels. At Expedia we believe the heart of travel is connection, and this event represents coming together after a long period of separation to celebrate New York City’s comeback.”

Cities Poised for Recovery

Throughout 2020, city destinations saw a significant dip in tourism as the pandemic forced entertainment, dining, and attractions to close. However, cities around the globe are starting to have a major vacation comeback as restrictions ease. Likewise, interest in NYC trips has been steadily gaining steam. Travelers are clearly dreaming of the chance to catch a show, visit a museum, see the leaves change in Central Park or enjoy one of the many other experiences one can only find in New York.

Music + Travel

“Music festivals and travel go hand-in-hand because they bring travelers in from around the country and sometimes even the world to experience the culture and soundtrack of a specific destination,” Singh continues. “We want travelers to come for the music and stay for the city. We’re ready to be the helping hand enabling them to make the most out of that trip and look forward to shining the spotlight on more incredible city destinations this fall.”

There is a clear connection between the power of music and travel to help people escape or be transported, whether mentally, emotionally, or physically. In fact, 62 percent of people who book travel online list “music” and specifically “festivals” as a key passion point.1 Looking ahead, this connection could get even stronger as travelers seek out transformational, meaningful experiences from their post-pandemic trips.

For those looking for the perfect way to combine their passions for travel and music and get into a NYC state of mind, check out this list of five NYC hotels with a musical past and this Expedia-curated playlist featuring artists from NYC.
