The Wall Street Journal recently noted that many universities are cutting back on admissions to doctoral programs while they are freezing hiring in this area. The doctoral programs are the ultimate “ivory tower” arena of society.
Professors, who tend to be leftists, opine about many causes while they have been insulated from the economic realities of the surrounding world.
Universities have been run by members of the educational establishment who have fended off any attempts by those who would install business principles on college campuses. When universities have hired administrators who use a business approach, the faculty has often revolted and ended any attempts to control costs. The mainstream media has often aided and abetted those who protested against attempts to control costs on campuses.
This lack of business perspective has led to universities that are financially bloated because they have spent prolifically on expanding the university bureaucracy. For years this behavior was rewarded with huge federal subsidies that helped pay the bills.
As the old saying goes: “This ain’t your daddy’s federal government.” Under President Trump, the funding to universities has been cut back and this has forced many universities to examine where the limited federal subsidies should be utilized.
Many doctoral programs produce graduates with limited use in the business community. Which business needs a graduate with a doctoral degree in critical race theory?
Recent economic reports have revealed that unemployment has risen for workers with doctoral degrees. Universities have had to reduce hiring and businesses don’t care to hire workers with doctoral degrees.
Of course, universities are claiming that this funding decrease will hurt vital research. Ordinary Americans laugh because social media has revealed to the public the antics of college students. Rants about “Free Palestine” and “Support Transgender Studies” have caused Americans to have second thoughts about the whole college experience.
Fortunately, the nation’s loss of another degree in gender studies will be the gain of another Starbucks barista.
