Manatee County to Pursue Emerson Point Preservation Expansion MANATEE COUNTY, FL (March 12, 2024) – The Manatee County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted unanimously to purchase a 97-acre parcel of land adjacent to the existing Emerson Point Preserve for conservation. Staff presented updated figures showing the comparative value of the property to be $14.6 million while the latest asking price is at $15.5 million. District 3 Commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge made the motion to instruct staff and the County Attorney to pursue negotiations at the $15.5 million price with the seller and report back to the board, saying “I look forward to completing this whole parcel.” “We’ve always wanted to do this,” said Manatee County District 5 Commissioner Ray Turner, addressing the conservationists and concerned citizens who lined up to urge commissioners to make the purchase during the public comment period. Every other member of the BOCC spoke of their passionate support for preserving this additional portion of Emerson Point. “I’m in full support,” said At-Large Commissioner Jason Bearden. “This is important,” said District 2 Commissioner Amanda Ballard. “I’m excited to support the proposal.” “I think this is going to be a great addition,” said District 1 Commissioner James Satcher. “I am glad we were able to move forward and expedite the matter,” said At-Large Commissioner George Kruse. Finally, commenting on the unanimous vote, Commission Chair Mike Rahn said, “We’re on track.” Final details of the deal will be presented to the BOCC after negotiations have been completed.
