Tom Tiffany is a Republican congressman who is running to be the next Governor of Wisconsin. Recently, he was travelling between campaign stops in a small plane which experienced engine trouble. The pilot was forced to make an emergency night landing in Lake Wausau which is 100 miles east of Green Bay.
The pilot and congressman managed to swim to a shallow part of the lake where a boat picked them up. Fortunately, their injuries were minor.
The news reports on the incident exposed the inherent bias that many reporters have against conservatives. Hope Karnopp of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel posted a tweet about the incident which stated “…the maximum depth of Lake Wausau is only 30 feet, and the mean depth is 7 feet.”
The use of the word “only” was called into question by readers as it appeared the reporter was attempting to downplay the severity of a crash landing in a lake at night. The reporter then tweeted that she inserted “only” so she could “explain the gravity of the situation…” which did not seem like much to her.
This reporter was obviously worried that the Republican candidate could gain some sympathy from the airplane crash he experienced so she felt it necessary to downplay the crash.
Today, one would have to be a moron to not acknowledge that reporters tend to be left of center in the political leanings. This bias has been one factor in the downfall of the media industry. This bias has also allowed the public to not trust items they read in the media. This has allowed conspiracy theorists to gain traction on the national and local level. It is sad to see so many reporters cannot just report the news.
