Fort Lauderdale —
Following the Broward School Board’s decision to require masks in district public schools, State Senator Gary Farmer released a statement in support of the policy.
“I want to thank the members of the Broward County School Board for taking the brave action that was absolutely necessary to protect our children, teachers, faculty, staff and their families from the very real threat of COVID-19. I believe that every person in our school system should strive to be an example for the students that they serve. By standing up to the bully in the Governor’s Mansion like they did today, the Broward County School Board set a shining example for our kids. They sent the message that no person no matter how loud or powerful they are, can intimidate them out of standing up for what is right.
“I am sure that after this the Governor will lash out in anger as he usually does. I am also sure that he will also do so in a manner that like his Executive Order is inconsistent with the Constitution and laws of Florida. The Governor has no authority to enforce his dangerous and politically motivated orders, and I am confident that the orders and any retaliatory action that he may take will not hold up in court. I am ready to defend our school board and our kids through this entire battle. The School Board sent a message today that our community will not yield to the tyrant in Tallahassee at the expense of our children’s lives, and will continue to follow the science rather than petty partisan politics. I am proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them in this fight.”
Earlier today Senator Farmer released a memo detailing his opposition to the Governor’s Executive Order and related Department of Health and Department of Education rulemakings. That memo can be found here.
Senator Farmer also addressed the School Board during the public comment portion of this morning’s meeting. The full video of Senator Farmer’s testimony can be found here.
