Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently gave a speech about the trauma our world is experiencing from left-wing political violence. Rubio is attempting to rally the world’s democracies to deal with the rising violence that is emanating from leftist groups and individuals.
There is a history of leftist violence around the world. FARC and Shining Path were Marxist groups that believed that violence was a legitimate way to force political change in South America. Many of the leaders of these groups were trained in Cuba by Castro and his communist followers.
Europeans dealt with Italy’s Red Brigade and the Baader-Meinhof Gang that spread political violence across the continent. Countless politicians were murdered by these leftist thugs.
In the United States we experienced political violence in the seventies with several leftist groups that preached and practiced violence as an acceptable means for political change. Ironically, many of the veterans of these violent groups were hired as faculty members of liberal arts colleges.
In the past decade, the US has witnessed violence with the Occupy Wall Street movement and the Black Lives Movement that burned cities after the George Floyd death.
Recently, we have observed leftist protestors attempting to kill Supreme Court justices. We watched a left wing student assassinate Charlie Kirk and we had two assassination attempts against President Trump.
Adam Smith, a Democrat Representative from the state of Washington cast a vote to eliminate US aid to Israel. Smith related that the decision had been difficult for him but he also revealed the tactics the leftists had used against him. Smith’s home was vandalized, a fire was started in his driveway, demonstrators harassed him and his neighbors with all-night demonstrations, his town hall meeting was shut down and one of his staff members was physically assaulted.
Sadly this has become the norm from leftist Democrats. Many young Democrats have become emboldened by the Black Lives Matter riots and the lack of consequences for political violence in states controlled by Democrats.
The mainstream press ignores the increase in political violence and calls any discussion regarding the violence a fascist invention. Americans of all political persuasions need to set a course to stop the spread of political violence. Secretary Rubio is smart to challenge world leaders to address the uptick in political violence.
