The tide has started to turn against the use of surgery and drugs on young people to “transition” them to a different gender. A recent lawsuit ended in a $2 million dollar verdict for a young woman who received a double mastectomy at the age of 16 as part of a “gender affirming” medical procedure. This is the first successful lawsuit against medical personnel who participate in “transitioning” young people.

The case is a sad example of how physicians can be so focused on “wokeness” that they ignore the practical realities of the mixed emotional states experienced by young people.

The plaintiff in the lawsuit was 16 at the time of the surgery. Her mother asserted that she was pressured by the defendant, a psychologist, to consent to the double mastectomy. He told her repeatedly that her daughter was at risk of suicide if she did not allow her breasts to be amputated.

This is the classic “woke” argument that is used to pressure parents into making unwise decisions that permanently alter their children’s future. Sadly, many medical personnel do not adequately warn young people about the negative consequences of transitioning surgery.

If a young person is merely passing through a phase like so many people experience, the odds suggest that they may be ultimately happy with their birth gender. If the life altering surgery is done during a phase that the patient ultimately grows out of, the consequences are horrible.

Regrettably, many physicians and hospitals have made huge amounts of money from “gender altering” surgeries. In my opinion, the allure of money may cause them to push patients towards the surgery.

The recent verdict that awarded the plaintiff $2 million dollars will hopefully increase the malpractice insurance premiums for the doctors and hospitals that render these surgeries on young people. Maybe, the potential for huge legal liabilities will result in fewer young people being pushed into life altering surgeries.
