Republicans Are Facing A Wakeup Call On The Abortion Issue

Republicans are facing a wakeup call on the abortion issue. For years, the Republican platform has called for the repeal of Roe v. Wade. During this time period, voters did not pay much attention to the issue because it appeared that Roe v. Wade would continue to be the law of the land.

Over the years the Democrat Party has evolved to the point where most of their leaders are fine with abortion until the birth of the child. A majority of Amerians however, have opposed the idea of abortion but they do not want the government to outlaw their right to have an abortion. Most European nations allow abortion in the first 12-15 weeks of gestation but not until birth as the Democrat leaders support.

When Roe v. Wade was overturned, several states including Florida began to severely restrict abortions. These strict restrictions against abortion have been a gift to the Democrat Party. As a result of the overturning of Roe, several states have now passed laws or constitutional amendments that allow more liberal abortion rights than they had when Roe was the law of the land.

It is now apparent that a significant majority of voters do not want strict  restrictions against abortion. These voters believe so strongly in the right to abortion that they will vote for any Democrat candidate. Included in this group are independent voters who would previously vote for Republican candidates. The reason the GOP has such a slim majority in the House of Representatives is the abortion issue. The reason the Democrats control the Senate is the abortion issue. Democrats have been able to galvanize young voters and female voters over the abortion issue.

If this continues in the 2024 election, the Democrats will win the Presidency, the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Democrat President will probably get several Supreme Court appointments and we will lose the 1st and 2nd Amendment rights.

On the abortion issue, the Republicans won the battle but lost the war. As a result of Roe v. Wade being overturned, more babies will be aborted. In a conflict, you must re-examine your tactics when you are losing.

Telling a young woman today that she can never have an abortion is like telling a young man from rural Alabama that he can not have an AR-15 rifle. The public will accept restrictions on abortion after 12-15 weeks, but the public will rebel against 6 week abortion limits.

Republicans must look at abortion as we would look at extramarital affairs. While we would not arrest someone for a lack of commitment in their marriage, we would strongly work with them to make them have the commitment to their marriage. Maybe we should view the abortion issue in this  manner. We oppose abortion but accept the reality that most Americans believe it should be legal. The strategy that the pro-life community would adopt would be to work to convince people to not use their legal right to abortion.

The last 4 weeks have shown a light on what happens when we allow Democrats to control our college campuses. This must change. We need a Republican President and Congress. We will never obtain this when we rally around candidates who support strict restrictions on abortion.
