Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is heading into his third year with the team and coming off a masterful Super Bowl run. In what may have been an effort to keep Bowles in Tampa Bay, the Bucs gave him a big contract extension. But will it be enough to keep him beyond 2021?

Speaking to the media this week, Bowles said that his sole focus is on improving his current team and not on his next job. He said that pursuing other jobs makes it harder to focus on the job he’s assigned. But he didn’t entirely rule out leaving if “something comes up at the end of the year.”

“I have a desire to get my team ready,” Bowles said. “I don’t look for the next job. You look for the next job, you don’t do the job you have. If something comes up at the end of the year, that’s a discussion. Right now, it’s the furthest thing from my mind.”

The Buccaneers came close to losing Bowles this past offseason. He received an interview with the Philadelphia Eagles and had one scheduled with the Detroit Lions before they backed out.

Knowing there was a strong likelihood he’d leave after the 2021 season, the Buccaneers gave him a multi-year contract extension.

Prior to joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Todd Bowles served as head coach of the New York Jets from 2015 to 2018. He went 10-6 in his first year but won just 14 over the next three, finishing his tenure with a 24-40 record.

That difficult tenure combined with his 2-1 stint as interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins might better prepare him for his next potential head coaching job.

But for now, the man appears focused solely on getting the Bucs back to the Super Bowl.

Will Todd Bowles get an NFL head coaching job next year?
