NFL Insider Has Latest On Chris Godwin, Buccaneers Contract Talks

Tampa Bay Buccaneers star wide receiver Chris Godwin signed a franchise tag back in March, locking him in for the 2021 season at just under $16 million guaranteed. But, according to recent reports, the fifth-year wideout could be in for a longterm contract extension sometime in the coming days.

With the deadline to extend tagged players quickly approaching on Thursday, Godwin and his representation are reportedly still involved in contract discussions with the Bucs front office — hoping to lock him up on an extended deal before the start of this coming season, per Tampa Bay Times insider Rick Stroud.

While his $15.9 million franchise tag is already a significant pay bump on his previous contract, Godwin has proved himself as a valuable WR option worthy of an even bigger payday. Making a total of just $4.64 million through his four-year rookie contract, the third-round pick out of Penn State logged 3,540 yards, 244 receptions and 24 touchdowns — including a Pro-Bowl selection in 2019.

With 840 yards and seven touchdowns in the 2020 regular season, Godwin finished the year as the Tampa Bay’s second leading receiver behind his wideout partner Mike Evans (1,006 yards, 13 TDs). He continued those impressive stats on the Bucs’ Super Bowl LV run last season, logging 232 yards and one touchdown en route to the team’s second title in franchise history.

Whether he and the Bucs can come to a longterm agreement or not, Godwin will look to post even more impressive numbers in his team’s title-defending season in 2021.
