Kamron Fields, a junior pitcher from TSU, was one pick away from being the baseball equivalent of the NFL’s Mr. Irrelevant, the last player picked in the draft.
Fields went at pick No. 611 to Tampa Bay just ahead of the final selection, Navy pitcher Charlie Connolly to the Dodgers.
Fields, who is from Garland, threw 68 innings last season, striking out 79 and allowing 37 walks and 69 hits. His final record was 4-6 with one save and a 5.03 ERA.
Fields played his first three seasons at Texas before transferring to TSU.
The last TSU player drafted was outfielder Lindon Bond 2007 in the 50th round by the Washington Nationals.
