Massive Fireworks Display Accidentally Goes Off in Maryland on July 4th Morning

A huge accident occurred on Fourth of July morning in Ocean City, Maryland.

While fireworks were being delivered to the beach town for a planned July 4th celebration, they unintentionally discharged and caused a massive explosion.

“It just freaked out a lot of people,” an eyewitness told WTOP. “People were on the boardwalk. A couple people started running. And a couple of people were just watching, because they weren’t sure.”

When firefighters responded to the scene, it was at first believed to be a vehicle fire, which obviously was not accurate.

“Our fire marshals are on the scene and will investigate the cause of the unintentional discharge,” said Ocean City Fire Chief Richie Bowers in a statement (via People). “Prior to the fireworks being offloaded from the vehicle, fire marshals secure a safe zone around the fireworks and put other safety protocols in place. It is this very zone and safety protocols that kept anyone else from being injured.”

The fire department says that employees of the firework company sustained minor injuries, though they refused transport to the hospital. The boardwalk has been closed during the investigation and tonight’s fireworks show was canceled.
