Texas Governor Announces Special Legislative Session on Voting and Critical Race Theory Bills

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday announced a special legislative session in an attempt to pass a measure targeting the state’s election laws and regulations—coming weeks after Democrats blocked a GOP-backed election reform package from advancing by leaving the Capitol building. The governor, a Republican, did not specify in his announcement Tuesday the legislative priorities that will be included during the special session, scheduled to start on July 8. But Abbott has already said that he will ask state lawmakers to work on elections and bail bills that were killed by Democrats when they walked out during the waning hours of the previous legislative session on May 30. “Agenda items will be announced prior to the convening of the special session,” Abbott said in a statement.
