Capping its 30th anniversary this year, Breakthrough Miami was selected as one of 13 nonprofit organizations that received the NFL’s Inspire Change Social Justice Grant.
Breakthrough was the only nonprofit organization in Florida to receive funds as part of the NFL’s initiative Inspire Change, part of its 10-year $250 million commitment to social justice.
Breakthrough’s students-teaching-students model has been helping students become leaders since 1991 and serves 1,300 fifth to 12th grade students in an academic and social enrichment program. The students are mentored by 130 Teaching Fellows (17-24-year-olds) and over 400 volunteers. Breakthrough will use the money to advance a Changemaker Leadership Track for Breakthrough Scholars and recent alumni. Closing the opportunity gap, this work builds students’ capacities to challenge the digital divide, gain early intensive work experience, college advising, financial literacy, and leadership development, impacting not only their personal development and growth trajectories but the efficacy of academic and social enrichment they lead with 900 middle school Scholars.
