Former Florida deputy, children’s clown arrested, accused of ‘disturbing’ threats

A former Florida deputy was arrested in Volusia County after making threats against his family and others. Derick Velez, 58, is a former Monroe County deputy and owner of a children’s clown business where he occasionally performs as “Po Po the Clown.”Velez is accused of making “disturbing” threats, including saying the tragedies at Columbine High School and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland were nothing compared to what he could do. Velez was taken in under a Baker act before this arrest and when he was released, Velez allegedly told his 9-year-old daughter he was going to take her and her mother to “the most magical place on the planet.” According to a release from deputies, he then told her that he was taking the child and her mother to heaven. Velez was taken into custody once again and started to call and threaten his wife, the report said. The release said the calls followed weeks where Velez made statements about committing mass murders. “(Velez) believed he is a prophet of God and has been commanded to form an army and they were going to rise up,” the release said.Velez is also accused of making threats against former colleagues in Monroe County.
