Another blue state is facing a taxpayer revolt over another round of tax increases. In Oregon, the Democrat leadership and public employee unions worked together to pass a transportation tax that will raise $4.3 billion additional tax dollars.
The new tax is a combination of payroll taxes, gasoline taxes and higher vehicle registration fees. Don’t forget, Oregon already has the 4th highest income tax rate in the country.
Instead of controlling spending when facing a budget deficit, Oregon’s Democrat Governor, Tina Kotek, and her fellow Democrats passed this tax that has infuriated Oregon’s taxpayers. Kotek has never held a private sector job and clearly has no understanding of how capitalism works. She understands that her focus is supporting government sector union employees and she will use every legal trick she can to raise taxes to support government spending while ignoring the plight of taxpayers.
Eventually, however, the taxpayers have a say about government spending and tax increases. The taxpayers of Oregon appear to be saying that they have reached their limit. There has been a grassroots movement to obtain enough signatures to support a ballot initiative to overturn these new tax increases.
Across blue states, tax increase initiatives are normally supported by government worker unions who front the cost of paying people to collect enough signatures to get the tax increase initiatives on the ballot. This is taking place now in California where a public worker union is paying people to collect signatures to get the “Billionaire Tax” on the ballot.
In Oregon, the opposition to the tax increases is organic and a total grassroots movement that is not paying people to collect signatures. Of course, the Democrats have used their union bosses to harass citizens collecting signatures in opposition to the new tax.
The basic problem is that Democrats refuse to control spending! We are witnessing this in Minnesota where they refuse to control spending and they refuse to stop the fraudulent use of taxpayer dollars. The public is finally tiring of paying higher taxes while fraud and waste run rampant in Democrat controlled states.
It is ironic that the Democrats love to talk about “affordability” while they raise taxes on hardworking taxpayers. These Democrats know they can count on those that benefit from the fraud and abuse to support the tax increases.
In Oregon, it appears that the tax jig is finally up. The voters, not Democrat politicians, will soon have an up or down vote on the new taxes. These tax increases are increasingly being imposed on working taxpayers because the Democrats are running off the wealthy people they need to support their wasteful spending. Working Americans have said: “Enough is enough.”
