Why are we as a country continuing to educate Chinese students at our premier educational institutions? This question is being asked by more Americans who are skeptical of the mainstream mantra that we all benefit by educating foreign students in our universities.
Mike Gallagher, head of defense at Palantir Technologies and former Congressman who chaired the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, recently asserted in the Wall Street Journal that America needs to stop educating students from our major enemies.
Over the past decade, universities have increased the percentage of foreign students accepted to the schools at the expense of American students. Harvard University now has 30% of its student body from overseas while Columbia has 40%.
While it is possible to make an argument that bringing foreign students into our country for educational purposes is a noble goal, it is hard to make that argument when it pertains to our enemies such as Russia, Iran and China.
It is also ironic that these foreign students at our elite universities are being educated by many professors who hate our political system.
Should we allow Iranian students to study in our nuclear programs? Why should we allow Chinese students to study in our AI programs while we are in competition with China to develop the strongest AI program for our defense industry?
Gallagher states that “Blindly embracing academic cooperation with a geopolitical rival is absurd.” Sadly our universities have become “hooked” on the Chinese money. The Chinese students pay full tuition which is often underwritten by the Chinese government.
Over the last decade as more Chinese students have entered our universities, the universities have ignored the aggressive police action that China takes against Chinese students in America who protest against the policies of the Chinese Communist Party. There are numerous examples of coordinated threats and harassment against these students if they question the communist authorities.
Because of the aggressive actions of the Chinese government, every Chinese student in our country is a potential spy. China does not hesitate to force each student to obtain information that can ultimately be used against our country.
Fortunately, our President has control of the visas that Chinese students need to gain entry into our country. We need to take an aggressive action in limiting or ending the visas given to Chinese students for educational purposes. Gallagher argues that we should begin by not allowing the children of Chinese Communist Party members to gain entrance into our country.
We would never have allowed German students to train in our universities during World War II. We are at war with China and it makes no sense to let them dominate our universities.
