Being Woke Destroyed The Sierra Club

“Wokeness” is a disease that has infected much of our social media over the past decade. It  infiltrated our educational systems and it permeated our governmental bodies that were run by Democrats. Wokeness also destroyed some environmental organizations that moved their focus away from conservation. 

The Sierra Club is an example of a conservation group that was destroyed because they changed their focus from protecting the environment to  a focus on woke social issues. 

According to news reports, since 2022, the Sierra Club has lost 60% of its 4 million members. Michael Brune was the Executive Director of the Sierra Club during this catastrophe. Brune believed that the Sierra Club needed to embrace social issues instead of focusing on environmental issues. He was a victim of Trump Derangement Syndrome. He led the group to a new direction that focused on being anti-Trump instead of pro-conservation.

Once Brune changed the focus of the organization, they went off the proverbial cliff. The Sierra Club endorsed defunding the police and paying financial reparations to descendants of slaves. The Sierra Club even published an equity language guide. 

National Review reported that the equity language guide had 26 pages on “people-first language.” A “felon” became a “formerly incarcerated person” and the guide banned the use of the terms “deaf”, “blind” or “lame”. It even discouraged the use of the term “American”.

The Sierra Club was founded over a century ago and John Muir was a founding member. Muir was famous as a photographer of nature and an advocate for preserving large swaths of land from development. The Sierra Club had members from all sides of the political spectrum. 

The recent switch from focusing on conservation to a leftist organization has had disastrous financial consequences for the Sierra Club. The Sierra Club has laid off many employees because their donations have dropped since they began to focus on leftist politics.

In 2023, the Sierra Club raised $173 million. During the same period, the Nature Conservancy raised $1.48 billion. The Nature Conservancy, unlike the Sierra Club, has avoided joining the woke leftist causes.

Fortunately, Florida has had strong leadership that has helped our state avoid the disasters that come from being woke!
