Enough has been written about the boorish behavior of Bradenton City Council member Bill Sanders. I am not going to dignify his behavior by wasting your valuable reading time. I am going to discuss the campaign of Kurt Landefeld to replace Sanders on the Bradenton City Council.
Landefeld was raised in Ohio where he had a career in advertising. He and his wife moved to Bradenton in 2016. Landefeld became involved in his homeowners association (HOA) and ended up serving several years as President.
Through Landefeld’s leadership of his HOA he met Bradenton Mayor Wayne Poston and was eventually appointed to serve on the Bradenton Planning Commission. During this time he attended Bradenton City Council meetings and was shocked by the behavior of Bill Sanders. “In all my years of watching politicians, I have never seen anyone behave so poorly in public life.”
Landefeld realized that Sanders needed to be defeated in the election and he was willing to support any qualified person that decided to run against Sanders. When no one stepped forward, Landefeld declared his candidacy for the Bradenton City Council.
Landefeld believes the most important issue for the new City Council is what to do with the present City Hall site. Landefeld agrees with the idea of selling the City Hall site and bringing in a development that increases tax receipts to the City of Bradenton.
Landefeld believes that the proceeds from the sale of the property would allow the City to build a new City Hall and police headquarters in a more appropriate location. Because of the City’s strong financial position, bonds will be able to be sold to help the project commence. The development of the City Hall property would bring more jobs to downtown Bradenton. Tax revenues would increase from the new shops, condos and apartments. New businesses will spring up downtown as a result of the new residents in the new development.
Wherever the new City Hall is built, the surrounding area will experience economic growth.
Another issue that Landefeld intends to address is attracting new workforce housing to the City of Bradenton.
Landefeld believes that he would bring a sense of decorum to the Bradenton City Council. While there may be differences of opinion, he will respect the opinions of his fellow council members and staffers.
This should be an easy race to remove Sanders from the City Council. He continues to give the City of Bradenton bad publicity. Unfortunately, a lawyer from Lakewood Ranch entered the race at the last minute. Most astute political observers believe that her entry into the race gives Sanders his best chance to win reelection. One has to question the motives of someone who enters such a crucial race at the last minute when a quality candidate like Kurt Landefeld is in the race.
The City of Bradenton will be well served if Kurt Landefeld is elected to the Bradenton CIty Council.
