Florida hit a grim high on Sunday for the daily number of Coronavirus patients admitted to the hospital.

A total of 10,207 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Florida on Sunday, the highest number in the state one day after breaking its record for single-day new cases.

The Sunshine State now leads the nation in per-capita hospitalizations for the virus after averaging 1,525 adult hospitalizations per day and 35 pediatric hospitalizations per day over the past week, the Associated Press reported.

The previous record had been set on July 23, 2020, over a year ago, when Florida reported 10,170 hospitalizations.

The state’s hospitals were attempting to treat the overflow of patients.

The city’s Mayo Clinic was forced to operate at overcapacity after exceeding its 304 licensed beds due to the influx of virus patients, according to First Coast News in Jacksonville. The University of Florida Health North hospital in Jacksonville placed patients in hallways.

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare announced a single day jump of 11 hospitalizations due to coronavirus, bringing its total to 70.

“This is the most we’ve ever had,” Stephanie Derzypolski, a hospital spokeswoman, told the Tallahassee Democrat.

Pinellas County administrator Barry Burton told the Tampa Bay Times that some local hospitals are diverting ambulances to different locations due to the crowding.
