Two things characterize contemporary Democrats: a willingness to impose rules that they don’t believe they have to live by, and an advocacy of “tolerance” and “inclusion” that they themselves do not have to practice.
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Florida Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy provide the latest example of both.
Amid a Republican revolt over mask-wearing in the U.S. Capitol, in which the chief of the Capitol Police, which are under the speaker’s control, said those who violate the mask mandate ought to be arrested. That came after Pelosi reinstated the mask mandate for the House floor, which led her to call House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy a “moron” after he publicly denounced the policy. According to the Capitol Police policy, lawmakers themselves are supposed to be referred to the House Sergeant at Arms.
During a swearing-in ceremony of new Rep. Jake Ellzey of Texas last week, Pelosi took offer her mask for a photo, apparently in violation of Capitol Police regulations that she herself supports.
Outside the Capitol on Friday, in a video posted to YouTube, a staffer for the National Republican Congressional Committee asked Murphy as she passed by whether Pelosi should in fact be arrested for removing her mask.
Murphy did not respond verbally to the question. But as she walked by she gave her questioner the middle finger.
Republicans denounced Murphy.
GOP state Rep. Anthony Sabatini, who is challenging Murphy in 2022, tweeted: “ My far-left opponent @SMurphyCongress has embarrassed Florida once AGAIN — this time for giving the bird to a person who asked her a simple question. This Congresswoman is total trash! I’m officially calling for her immediate resignation NOW!”
Cory Mills, another Republican running for Murphy’s seat, took to Twitter to chide Murphy for her “childishness and unprofessionalism.”
In a statement, NRCC communications director Michael McAdams added, “House Democrats can’t handle being held accountable for their radical actions so they’re resorting to making obscene gestures at young female staffers.”
