Full Story:

On Mexican Independence Day, Alexa Grasso looks to continue her reign as UFC flyweight champion against a determined Valentina Shevchenko, the former champion. Who will come out on top at Noche UFC?

The event is at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and airs on ESPN+ in the U.S. Grasso and Shevchenko compete for a customized belt to celebrate Mexican Independence Day.

Born in Guadalajara, Grasso was on a four-fight win streak before facing Shevchenko. She used the momentum of “Bullet” against her and landed a choke in the fourth round to win gold for the first time.

Per Bet MGM, Shevchenko was the -650 favorite, while Grasso was the +425 underdog when they fought. Shevchenko is the favorite again, but like the first bout, Grasso is ready to prove everyone wrong in the sequel.

“I’m truly excited for the second fight, and I also know that people will love to see it because a lot of people say it was a mistake from her and it was a fluke,” Grasso said on The MMA Hour. “Of course, I don’t think it was a fluke because I trained so much for that [move], but I think it’s going to be important to show everyone that I’m the champion.”

Shevchenko held a firm grip on the flyweight division for four years, defending the UFC flyweight title seven times, often in brutal fashion. A calculating figure, the 35-year-old underestimated the skills of Grasso, resulting in her first loss in five years. Considered the boogeywoman of her division, Shevchenko looks to return to form and become the 10th new champion in the UFC this year.

“I’m going to remind people who I am,” Shevchenko told Sports Illustrated. “I think a lot of people have forgot. People aren’t rewatching the fight, they’re just watching the finish. I was winning that fight. Now I have a chance to fix my mistakes and show what I was supposed to do the first time.”
