Barcelona conclude their U.S. preseason tour with a weekend visit to MLS side New York Red Bulls.

Just a lone friendly against Pumas UNAM at the Camp Nou remains after this before Barcelona begin their 2022/23 La Liga campaign.

While the Spanish side prepare to begin their season, the Red Bulls are in the midst of a quality MLS season, sitting third in the Eastern Conference and reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup.

These two clubs have faced off twice before, both times in summer friendlies, with Barcelona winning both meetings. A 4-1 win for Barcelona in 2006 was followed up two years later by a 6-2 victory. Famed striker Ronaldinho bagged a brace in the first match, while current manager and former midfielder Xavi was the first of six goalscorers in the 2008 game.

NY Red Bulls vs. Barcelona projected lineups

New York will likely rest its key players for this match, given that the Red Bulls are on the heels of a deep U.S. Open Cup run and simultaneously battling for a top spot in the MLS Eastern Conference.

Defender Aaron Long could be a prime candidate for rest. Both his club and national team have eased Long back into match action after returning from his Achilles injury a few months ago, and while he’s been back to full match fitness for a while now, there are signs of lingering caution. Long was withdrawn at halftime of the win over Austin FC last weekend with the Open Cup semifinal looming days later.

The Red Bulls could give young midfielders Daniel Edelman and Caden Clark a chance to earn playing time. Frankie Amaya, 21, was rested in favor of the two 19-year-olds Edelman and Clark in the win over Austin.

New York previous starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Coronel (GK) — Tolkin, Long, S. Nealis, Edwards — Yearwood, Edelman — Clark, Fernandez, Ngoma — Klimala.

Xavi will continue to test out his wealth of attacking talent to determine a regular forward line. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raphinha excelled against Inter Miami, while new signing Robert Lewandowski and Ousmane Dembele were the stars against Juventus.

There’s also Ansu Fati, Memphis Depay, and Ferran Torres to find a place for as well. Depay could be off before the close of the transfer window, while Torres has yet to appear in preseason due to a knock.

American full-back Sergino Dest has earned playing time in preseason and figures to be a key component of the Barcelona starting lineup that is thin at full-back. Franck Kessie has looked excellent since joining this summer from AC Milan, while Frenkie de Jong remains with the squad despite significant noise around a possible transfer to Manchester United.

Manager Xavi is with the club after missing the first friendly against Inter Miami due to a visa issue.

Barcelona previous starting lineup (4-3-3): Ter Stegen (GK) — Alba, Garcia, Christensen, Roberto — Kessie, Busquets, N. Gonzalez — Aubameyang, Lewandowski, Dembele.
