Quick Bit: The PGA of America moved the 2022 PGA Championship from Donald Trump’s Bedminster course in January.

Full Story:

This week, LIV Golf will host its third event, LIV Golf Bedminster. The event will be held at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., where the PGA of America was supposed to host the 2022 PGA Championship. It moved the tournament from the former president’s course to Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla.

The course, which was tapped to host the 2022 PGA Championship in 2014, had its partnership with the PGA of America terminated in January.

From July 29-31, the course will host another professional event, albeit of a controversial breakaway golf league. While LIV Golf has had its ups and downs, there’s no denying it has attracted big-name golfers, even at the expense of those players having their PGA Tour memberships suspended.

The Saudi Arabia-backed league playing at Trump’s course is a controversy on top of a controversy, but LIV has been anything but controversy-free. There’s no reason to think the name on the course would stop it from playing there.

Why did the PGA of America move the 2022 PGA Championship from Trump National?

According to PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh, the organization had no idea what a lightning rod Donald Trump would become when the agreement was made in 2014.

“My feeling was we could do existential damage to our brand by staying at Bedminster,” Waugh said in an interview with the Fire Pit Collective. “If we stayed, the 2022 PGA would be about its ownership. People would think we were making a statement by staying there. I felt like we could do permanent damage to the brand if we stayed. As did the board.”

The course’s representation and the PGA of America entered into a legal battle that was resolved by the end of 2021, before the PGA of America announced the cancellation.

Why will LIV Golf host its event at Trump’s course?

Trump has been called on by the families of 9/11 victims to cancel this event, but he appears to have no intentions of doing so.

Trump wrote on his social media platform that golfers should accept LIV’s money, according to The New Yorker.
