Quick Bit: Thanks to a 3-0 win over Costa Rica, the USWNT moved into the final of the CONCACAF W Championship, where it will play for a direct ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games against the winner of the Canada vs. Jamaica semifinal.
The USWNT is on a quest to secure a direct berth in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. To accomplish the feat, it needs to win its next two matches in the CONCACAF W Championship, beginning with Thursday’s semifinal against Costa Rica.
A victory would see the Americans advance to Monday’s final where they would meet the winner of the Canada vs. Jamaica semifinal taking place later Thursday. A date with defending Olympic champion Canada would prove the heavyweight showdown.
But the USWNT will have its hands full with No. 37-ranked Costa Rica, which has shown to be a cohesive, organized side during this tournament. Las Ticas showed off their attacking firepower with 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Panama and Trinidad and Tobago, respectively, in the group stage. They also gave Canada a battle in a 2-0 loss.
Both the USWNT and Costa Rica clinched a spot in the 2023 FIFA World Cup by virtue of advancing to the semifinals. The winner of the tournament claims the direct berth in the 2024 Olympics, while the other North American spot at the Paris Games will be decided between the second-place and third-place finishers in a September 2023 playoff.

Despite losing to Canada in the last group stage match, Costa Rica was tactically organized and arguably deserved more from the match. And as it turns out, head coach Amelia Valverde used the match to rest most of the team’s starters, with six fresh starters introduced against the Americans.
