Quick Bit: Tiger begins a mad scramble to make the weekend cut at Round 2 of the Open Championship. Follow along as The Sporting News tracks his progress:

Full Story:

Tiger Woods will need one heck of a second round at the 2022 Open Championship to make the cut at St. Andrews.

The buildup for Tiger returning to his favorite golf course was quickly deflated Thursday after he opened the tournament with a double bogey on Hole No. 1, bogeys on Holes 3 and 4 and another double bogey on No. 7. He did manage to make three birdies, but he also had three back-nine bogeys to finish the day at 6 over par.

Just like that, any thoughts that he could compete for a fourth Claret Jug disappeared. He is 14 strokes behind first-round leader Cameron Young. The question now is whether can even make the weekend. The projected cut was after Round 1 was even par; 76 golfers managed to card at least that score Thursday. (Woods was tied for 146th after the first round, so he has quite a ways to go to move up the leaderboard).

If there is any silver lining to Tiger’s opening round, it’s that he has very little pressure entering the second round. All that remains for him is to play.
