Quick Bit: The Canada women’s national team can set up a tasty final against rivals USWNT if it can overcome Jamaica in a CONCACAF W Championship semifinal. Canada is aiming to win the competition for regional bragging rights and for a ticket to the 2024 Olympics.

Full Story:

The Canada women’s national soccer team is one step away from a rematch against the USWNT for the title of best team in North America. The Canadians face Jamaica on Thursday night in a CONCACAF W Championship semifinal with the Americans waiting on the winner.

No. 6-ranked Canada will be eager to reach the final because in addition to battling for regional bragging rights, the winner of the W Championship tournament will receive a ticket to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where the Canadians will be hoping to defend their gold medal.

But No. 51-ranked Jamaica will be a tricky opponent with dangerous attacking players who can do damage in transition, led by captain Khadija “Bunny” Shaw. Although they lost 5-0 to the USA in the group stage, the Reggae Girlz beat Mexico 2-0 and won against Haiti 3-0. Their formula will be to defend and attempt to catch Canada on the counter.

The semifinal loser will still hold out hope of reaching the Olympics. The second-place and third-place teams in the CONCACAF W Championship will meet for the other North American berth to the women’s Olympic tournament in a September 2023 playoff.
