One way or another, the NCAA softball national championship trophy is headed to the Red River.

Defending national champion and No. 1 overall seed Oklahoma is set to battle Big 12 rival Texas in the Women’s College World Series finals this week, in a clash of teams that are more than familiar with one another.

The Sooners have lost just three of their 60 games this season. One of those defeats came against the Longhorns on April 16. Hailey Dolcini was in the circle that day for Texas, and as she has done time and time again this season, she dazzled, giving up just two hits in a complete-game victory.

Dolcini is one of the nation’s best arms. In 2021, she earned the Mountain West Pitcher of the Year Award during her last season at Fresno State, posting a remarkable 1.12 ERA. Against the best the Big 12 has to offer, Dolcini has shined once more. She has a 2.35 ERA entering Wednesday’s contest.

Dolcini will have her hands full with Oklahoma’s lineup, though. The Sooners are blessed with the bats in their hands; they have averaged 9.22 runs per game, nearly a run and a half more than second-place Wichita State. That offense is steered by slugger Jocelyn Alo. The NCAA’s all-time leader in home runs showed off her strength in the last round, launching a grand slam (career home run No. 120) to push Oklahoma to the World Series.

It’s David vs. Goliath, the plucky underdogs taking on the seasoned favorites. Regardless of the result, one thing is certain: the fans attending USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City are sure to see the highest form of the sport at play.
