Los Angeles Students and Staff in for a Rough Year as District Announces What They’ll Be Expected to Do Every Week to Fight COVID

The Los Angeles Unified School District wants every single student and school employee to undergo weekly coronavirus testing as a condition of returning to in-person learning.

The district, which is the nation’s second-largest, previously said that vaccinated individuals would not need testing.

However, LAUSD on Thursday told parents and workers that it would be implementing mandatory COVID-19 testing, starting next week.

“All students and employees, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, returning for in-person instruction must participate in baseline and ongoing weekly COVID testing. This is in accordance with the most recent guidance from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Baseline testing begins on Monday, August 2,” the district announced in a statement on its website.

In the statement to parents and employees, Interim Superintendent Megan Reilly said as conditions change, so will the rules.

“We are closely monitoring evolving health conditions and adapting our response in preparation for our full return to in-person learning on August 16,” Reilly said.

The union president of United Teachers Los Angeles, Cecily Myart-Cruz, backed Reilly, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“Vaccines are like seatbelts: necessary but not invincible,” Myart-Cruz said. “Just like we need seatbelts, airbags, and speed limits, we need masks, ventilation, and testing to keep school communities safe.”

The Times quoted one parent as having a negative reaction to the announcement, however.

Is this really necessary?

“As a parent, it is my responsibility to keep them healthy and safe, I do not need the district to poke and prod my healthy children unnecessarily. This mitigation strategy they claim to be of the highest standard is severely overreaching,” a west San Fernando Valley parent said.

The Times withheld the parent’s name, saying she “requested anonymity out of concern that her child could be targeted for criticizing the district.”

Reilly also said in the statement that schools will require all students and employees to wear masks on school grounds and social distance as much as possible.

One expert said testing must include vaccinated people due to the spread of the Delta variant of the virus, according to The New York Times.

“The evidence is mounting that vaccinated individuals can be part of transmission chains,” said Dr. Anne Rimoin, professor of epidemiology at the Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Any testing regimen that does not include vaccinated individuals is going to be incomplete and leave people at risk.”

Baez thrilled to be joining Florida high school foe Lindor on the Mets

NEW YORK (AP) — Javier Baez got his wish: He’s headed to New York to play with Francisco Lindor.

But first, the Mets are counting on their big-name newcomer to replace his good buddy at shortstop for a while.

With the trade deadline fast approaching Friday, the NL East leaders acquired Baez and pitcher Trevor Williams from the Chicago Cubs for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Baez, a two-time All-Star and 2020 Gold Glove winner, gives New York an immediate fill-in for Lindor. The star shortstop, obtained from Cleveland in a blockbuster deal last winter, is sidelined with a strained oblique and not expected back until at least mid-to-late August.

“I’m super excited. I couldn’t be happier,” Lindor said. “I can’t wait for him to come out here and put on a show for everybody.”

The flashy Baez, who can become a free agent after the season, is batting .248 with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs. He has a .775 OPS and 13 stolen bases in 16 tries, but also leads the National League with 131 strikeouts. He’s made 18 errors in 88 games.

“We think he adds a lot — brings a ton of energy to our team,” Mets acting general manager Zack Scott said. “Knows how to win, knows how to do a lot of things to help us win. Plays elite defense, and baserunning and power.”

Baez and Lindor both went to high school in Florida and played against each other before scores of scouts. They were drafted back-to-back in 2011, with Lindor going eighth overall to Cleveland and Baez ninth to the Cubs. Later, they were teammates with Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.

“I’m really excited to play next to him,” said Baez, expected to join the Mets in time for Saturday night’s home game against Cincinnati.

Both are energetic players with an entertaining flair, though Baez’s boisterous antics sometimes rankle opponents.

“He knows some people on our team, obviously,” Scott said. “He’s been very vocal about wanting to play with Francisco, which he’ll get an opportunity to do at some point when Francisco’s back playing for us. But we just think this really makes our team pretty deep and versatile. So we’re excited to have him.”

When Lindor returns, Baez could move to second base or even third if needed. At second, he and Lindor would make for a slick double-play combination.

“He fits a direct positional need right now with Francisco being out for a little while. But he is also excited to move around,” Scott said.

New York has Jeff McNeil at second base and J.D. Davis at third, with Jonathan Villar and Luis Guillorme also getting significant playing time in the infield this season due in large part to injuries and their own fine play. Villar and Guillorme have been filling in at shortstop for Lindor.

“There’s plenty of time to have that dialogue and feel things out for what makes the most sense with the roster,” Scott said. “Things change daily around here this year. For right now, though, we know where (Baez) is going to be.”

Williams was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, but also is a meaningful addition for a Mets team that was eager to reinforce a thin rotation depleted by injuries. Scott revealed Friday that ailing ace Jacob deGrom has been shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his pitching elbow, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the team before September.

Williams is 4-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) this season, his first with the Cubs after spending his first five years in Pittsburgh.

The 29-year-old right-hander is 35-39 with a 4.49 ERA in 119 major league games, including 106 starts. He is eligible for arbitration after this season and can become a free agent following the 2022 season.

“I told him he’s definitely going to be part of what we’re trying to do here,” Scott said.

The Mets will receive $4,546,156 from the Cubs. Baez has an $11.65 million salary and Williams $2.5 million. Of the $4,868,817 owed the two for the final 64 days of the season, the cash means the Mets will be responsible in effect for $322,661.

New York began the day with a 3 1/2-game lead in the NL East over Philadelphia, and third-place Atlanta was four back. Both those teams also made moves before Friday’s trade deadline in an effort to upgrade and chase down the Mets.

Before the deal for Baez and Williams, the Mets acquired veteran left-hander Rich Hill from Tampa Bay last week and plugged him into the rotation.

“We definitely tried and explored a lot of different things,” Scott said. “We just didn’t match up on everything. But we tried several things. We did bring in, like I said, depth pitching.”

The 19-year-old Armstrong, a first-round draft pick out of high school last year, is sidelined with a right shoulder injury. A left-handed thrower, he is considered an elite defender in center field.

Crow-Armstrong played six games this season for Low-A St. Lucie before getting hurt in May. He was 10 for 24 (.417) with two doubles, four RBIs, two stolen bases, seven walks and six strikeouts.

“It’s not easy for us to give up prospects,” Mets president Sandy Alderson said. “But in this particular case, when you’re a few games ahead in the division on roughly Aug. 1, we need to do something, not only to improve the team but to demonstrate to the players that we had their back and were attempting to make the team better for the next 60 games.”

The move was one of several by the disappointing Cubs in the days leading up to the deadline. Ready to rebuild, Chicago also traded away first baseman Anthony Rizzo, slugger Kris Bryant and closer Craig Kimbrel, plus other pieces.

Indians Waive the White Flag for 2021 Following Friday’s Deals

Why?

That’s the question a lot of Cleveland Indians fans are certainly asking themselves after news broke that the team traded with the Atlanta Braves for infielder Pablo Sandoval.

It is in exchange for outfielder Eddie Rosario and 500,000 cash considerations.

This season, the 34-year-old Sandoval is batting .178 with four home runs and 11 runs batted in. He was released by the Indians just hours after the deal.

On the flip side, Rosario is at .254 with seven home runs and 46 runs batted in. Additionally, he is making eight million dollars on the year, some of which the Indians will eat.

This may have factored in on the decision to trade him to the Braves in exchange for a player on a minor league contract for much less money.

Sandoval is a career .278 hitter with 153 home runs and 639 runs batted in. These numbers are obviously deceiving as he is certainly not the hitter he once was back in the day.

Take note that Rosario does have a strained right oblique. He has not seen action since July 5th and will likely spend a few more weeks on the injured list before making his Braves debut.

Indians fans are simply hoping for any type of contribution from Sandoval as a member of the Tribe moving towards the back-half of this ’21 season.

Whereas Braves fans are happy to have a new addition that could certainly make a big contribution, if healthy, for the remainder of the season once he returns to action.

The Braves are four games behind the New York Mets in the NL East and certainly are still in playoff contention. The Indians sit eight games behind the White Sox.

Tom Brady didn’t hide torn MCL from Buccaneers: ‘Thought everyone…

Tom Brady’s knee injury may not have been a mystery after all.

In July, news first surfaced that Brady had played the entirety of last season with a torn MCL in his left knee, an injury that warranted “pretty serious” surgery in February. Yet according to Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen, the severity of the injury had not been a secret to the Buccaneers.

“I thought everyone knew, [about his torn MCL],” Christensen said in a recent appearance on CBS Sports Radio. “When I first met him, he said, ‘Hey, my knee’s not 100 percent but with the tape job and stuff I’ll make it through the season and after the season we’ll get her fixed up.’

Tom Brady works out with the BuccaneersGetty Images

“He really does have a unique understanding of his body and competing and what it takes and can manage it. … He kind of managed it. We tried to be smart. We really didn’t modify much. We rested him like we would any veteran player at certain opportunities during the season.”

The Buccaneers never disclosed Brady’s aliment on any of their injury reports during the regular season and playoffs.

The injury certainly didn’t appear to pose any limitations for Brady, who threw for 4,633 yards and 40 touchdowns. The 43-year-old played in all 16 regular-season games and four postseason matchups en route to a Super Bowl victory, not once appearing on an injury report.

Samoa Confirms Plans to Cancel China-Funded Port Project

“We’ve indicated that [the port] would not be a priority for us at this time and that there would be other areas that we would be more interested in,” Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa told Reuters on July 28.

“I’m pleased the outgoing government had not reached a level of agreement with China where that is set in place,” she added.

Mata’afa won Samoa’s latest presidential election in April, replacing former Samoan president and longtime China ally Tuila’epa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi as the country’s top leader. Though Malielegaoi disputed the April vote that elected Mata’afa as president, Samoa’s top court validated her win on May 17.

Malielegaoi was a major champion of the now-scrapped port development deal funded by China. The project would have seen Beijing loan Samoa $100 million to expand the island nation’s Vaiusu Bay through its debt-inducing Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), with which China funds and builds infrastructure projects in developing countries.

“Samoa is a small country. Our seaports and our airports cater for our needs,” Mata’afa told Reuters in a telephone interview May 20 when she first announced plans to cancel Vaiusu Bay’s port development.

“It’s very difficult to imagine that we would need the scale that’s being proposed under this particular project when there are more pressing projects that the government needs to give priority to,” she said at the time.

Mata’afa added that “the level of indebtedness of our government to the government of China was a pressing issue for voters,” referring to Samoa’s April general election that saw her elected to the country’s top office.

“Who will be responsible to pay for the wharf loan of [WST] $250 million [almost $100 million],” Samoan Minister of Parliament Faumuina Wayne Fong asked Samoa’s parliament in February in the run-up to the April general election.

“The children and grandchildren of Vaiusu will suffer in the long run,” he warned. “We still owe China [WST] $400 million [about $160 million] in debts from the past. We do not have enough coconuts to repay the Chinese back for all these loans.”

Samoa is a tiny island nation in the South Pacific with a population of about 200,000. The island’s economy relies largely on tourism, subsistence farming, coconut and fish product exports, and foreign remittance, according to Reuters. China is Samoa’s single largest creditor through its BRI scheme, which accounts for roughly 40 percent of the island nation’s $160 million in external debts.
